Relocation roadmap

Your pre-move job-search roadmap

A staged view of what to investigate, prepare, and test before pursuing work in Germany.

1. Define the conditions

Write down your viable German regions, earliest start date, language level, salary floor, remote-work expectations, and any profession-recognition questions. Separate preferences from constraints. If residence permission is relevant, consult official German sources or qualified legal counsel before promising an employer a date.

2. Read the market before editing

Collect 12–20 recent vacancies across plausible job titles. Mark recurring responsibilities, required German level, sector vocabulary, and location patterns. This evidence should shape your target; your existing job title alone should not.

3. Build one credible application

Choose a representative vacancy. Adapt the CV so achievements carry context: scale, team, duration, budget, volume, or outcome where accurate. Prepare certificates and references in clear file names. Write a cover letter only when requested or when it adds a reason that the CV cannot show.

4. Test your account aloud

Practise a two-minute professional introduction, examples of recent work, why Germany fits the next step, and what is known about your move. Do not conceal uncertainty. Prepare thoughtful questions about reporting lines, language in the team, workplace location, and hiring stages.

5. Set a sustainable rhythm

Choose weekly periods for employer research, tailored applications, networking conversations, follow-up, and German practice. Record applications and deadlines. Review results after several weeks: silence may point to targeting or documents; late-stage rejections may call for stronger interview evidence.

6. Recheck before departure

Update your financial runway, temporary accommodation plan, insurance research, document copies, and registration requirements through official sources. A job-search adviser can organise career decisions, but does not replace legal, tax, or relocation specialists.
